Life Lessons from a 96 year old Style Icon

Even if you don’t know 99-year-old Iris Apfel, you would probably recognize her giant over-sized glasses and wild bursts of color in her clothing. Her eclectic style has such flair that she was the subject of an exhibit at The Metropolitan Museum of Art at her young age of 84. By 96 years old, she became the oldest person to have a Barbie made of her likeness.

In her memoir, Accidental Icon, Iris offers life lessons for those who believe that age is just a number. What better advice when you feel like you are falling apart than to buck it up and paste yourself back together! And what is the alternative, she says?

To stay young, she believes, you have to think young by keeping a sense of wonder, humor, and curiosity. She sees herself as the oldest living teenager. Do you need money to have style? She will don three-dollar bangles because she believes it’s not what you wear but how you wear it. Someone dressed in ten-thousand-dollar shoes and baubled to the nines may look like a Christmas tree if they try too hard to have style.
