You’ve decided to reduce your sugar consumption by avoiding soft drinks that often contain as much as 12 teaspoons of sugar in them. Diet soda cuts the calories and that reduces your sugar intake, which is beneficial. However, how good is diet soda for you? It turns out that it may increase a wide range of medical conditions. Researchers don’t know exactly why diet sodas increase risk of disease, but some believe they might damage blood vessels or cause chronic inflammation.
Diet soda offers no health benefits other than weaning people off sugary drinks. A study of over two thousand male factory workers who drank it showed they were more likely to develop diabetes. A 2017 study of 2,888 people showed that drinking one diet soda per day tripled their risk of stroke and Alzheimer’s disease.
Depending on whether you want to lose weight by drinking diet soda, you may find naturally flavored carbonated water as a viable alternative. If your looking for a caffeine jolt, drink unsweetened coffee or tea with milk, which can offer some sweetness.
