Reasons to use a Geriatric Doctor or Geriatrician if you are over 65 yrs old.

Even if you are happy with your current doctor, Geriatric doctors have one to two years of training in issues that specifically affect people over 65. They are the first to turn to if you have dementia or Alzheimer’s. However, their experience focuses on seniors, unlike most family practitioners whose patient base is 30 to 60-year-olds.

A geriatric doctor is the rarest specialist. They are experts in “geriatric syndromes” like falls, incontinence, muscle weakness, fatigue, or many other Senior issues. They manage all medications and often reduce the number of meds a senior takes. They have a holistic approach, including coordinating care with other health providers, creating a care plan, and providing palliative care.

If you want a doctor with more experience in osteoporosis, arthritis, heart disease, and mobility issues, then a geriatric doctor is for you. A geriatrician could make you feel more secure since he or she will address the underlying causes of an issue rather than assuming it is simply old age. There is a lot more to know and learn!

Read HERE to learn details about geriatric doctors, how they help solve complex issues, and how to find one. You’ll be glad you did!
