Summer’s Low Country Flavor: She Crab soup with a history

Summertime… a feel for the LowCountry.. you may find yourself spellbound by the matriach of Edisto Island who shares her recipe for homemade She Crab soup which you will be thanked for trying, by your family and friends! From her book about Gullah Geechee cooking, the stories which are weaved in among the recipes makes for both a delicious and humorous read, while also filling you in on important history about this culture, stretching back generations.  “At 89 years old, and with more than 50 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, (Emily) Meggett is a respected elder in the Gullah community of South Carolina. She has lived on the island all her life, and even at her age, still cooks for hundreds of people out of her hallowed home kitchen.”

OK, so I’m not sure how many people any of us could cook for out of our kitchens at the age of 89, but there’s a standing ovation coming from our house to hers..  If you haven’t heard of, or know much about Gullah Geechee, it’s definitely worth some exploration – even if just because it’s fun to say!  Let us know your thoughts at AgingTopic, and please send along any favorite recipes you have that we can share with our readers as we delve into summer months of good cookin –
