If you want to get away to a beautiful village reached by train which is car-free, with bountiful amenities, lodging, and excellent fine dining, look no further than Wengen in the Alps of Switzerland. Swiss chalets and lavish hotels are surrounded by stunning scenery in Lauterbrunnen Valley known for its 72 waterfalls. Whether your hobby is photography (there is no better backdrop for epic pictures) or hiking in summer or skiing in winter, you can also simply relax in this wonderland perched halfway up Mount Eiger. Other activies range from tobogganing, snowshoeing, and sledding to hiking, ziplining, and mountain-biking.
If you want something to write home about, definitely take the cable car up to Schilthorn and eat at Piz Gloria, a revolving restaurant featured in the 1969 James Bond film “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.” Don’t forget to sample their traditional chocolates and fondues, which are beyond comparison to what you may have expected!
Plenty of information about Wengen and its proximity to many other areas of interest, plus links for rail passes, places to stay, and an extensive range of activities can be found here in My Swiss Alps
