Family Mementos as a Precious Gift Idea

Holidays bring to mind lots of memories – usually a combination of sights, sounds, and smells… which leads me to highlight the first in a series of gift ideas. Whether this is a gift you want to make for your grandparents, or one you can make as a grandparent for your adult children, this is a terrific way to preserve memories in a beautiful and creative gift! Leaving a legacy can come in many shapes and forms, so be sure not to underestimate the power of old family recipes.

Handwritten recipes may be a thing of the past in most families, but it was a tradition for many generations to share secret family recipes, or at least favorite ones, by writing them down on cards and sending them along. If you were lucky, you would get one of the original cards complete with stains from grease or other food smears… and those really could bring you back to the moments in the kitchen when it was not just about baking.  It was also about conversations and love through a shared experience.

If you can locate the stash of recipe cards, or if those are few and far between but you can access them so that you can create your own recipe card, choose a frame for the kitchen wall and be creative.   It can have multiple openings or you can choose single frames and do a collection – the choice is yours.  If you want to include a photo in the mix, it’s sure to be a conversation-starter!
